Tremlett's Bitter Geneva

North American Bittersharp Variant

            [Acid-high; Sugar-medium; Tannin-high]

Cider

Bittersharp

Physical Attributes:
  • Shape: Small, oblong
  • Skin: Yellow with red streaking, waxy

            Delicious tart, astringent flavoured juice.

Neat History:

A somewhat curious case of an English Bittersweet apple that was erroneously catalogued in Geneva, NY and encouraged the propagation of a “Geneva” Tremlett's Bitter apple throughout North America. Still a highly prized cider apple – and by some accounts superior to the namesake.

Growing Attributes:
  • Precocity: Average
  • Vigour: Productive
  • Disease Tolerance: Below average
  • Zone Hardiness: 4 (Map link)
  • Pollination Group: IV (Chart) (Diploid, Self-Sterile)
  • Cropping: Biennial tendency
  • Picking Season: September-October
  • Storage: Poor
  • Special Care: Spur-bearing, spot picking required
