Mildly sweet
The Red Delicious apple, was originally discovered accidentally by an orchardist in Iowa in the late 1800s. As the story goes, the varietal was so resilient, that it succeeded numerous attempts by the orchardist to cut it down. Over the course of the following century, it came to represent over 75% of Washington’s apple production and dominated the market. It became the quintessential red apple, with its intensely dark crimson skin, and conical shape. The Red Delicious is a medium-sized apple that has only a very mildly sweet flavour, a light crispness, is juicy, yet has a tough skin. Relatively easy to grow. Requires warmer climate. Average vigour. Crops heavy. Good disease resistance, with especially good resistance to both fireblight as well as ceder apple rust.
