Old variety, 1600s, most likely originating in Denmark. The Gravenstein apple never became majorly popular commercially, however is a favourite among apple enthusiasts. This varietal produces a medium to large sized fruit that is both sweet and sharp, with a firm, crisp and juicy flesh. This apple is waxy and yellow/green, with crimson spots and reddish lines. Highly vigorous. Very hardy and generally resilient to disease. Tendency to biannual production. Doesn’t keep well.
