Bramley’s Seedling
The Definitive English Cooking Apple
[Acid- high; Sugar-low; Tannin-low]
Culinary, Cider
Sharp, Firm, Classic
Physical Attributes:
- Shape: large, oblate
- Skin: Green-yellow skin, sometimes red stripes
- Flesh: White, firm
Flavour:
A great palate cleanser when eaten raw because of its punchy lemony flavour, but it really comes to life when cooked or juiced and adds that “old-timey” apple flavour.
Neat History:
Sometimes – though rarely – the mother tree still stands, as is the case with this apple. Mary Ann Brailsford first planted the seedling in Nottinghamshire in 1809, and it is resoundingly a long-lived cultivar.
Growing Attributes:
- Precocity: Average
- Vigour: Highly vigorous, large branches
- Disease Tolerance: Above Average, susceptible to bitter pit
- Zone Hardiness: 4 (Map Link)
- Pollination Group: III (Chart) (Triploid)
- Cropping: Biennial, regular crops
- Picking Season: October
- Storage: 3-6 months
- Special Care: Long-lived. Tip-bearing
